Product conformity assessment, where the relevant legislation and standards that
must be met are identified, refers to the process of checking whether the product meets all the requirements set out in the applicable legislation and technical standards.
Product: This can be any product, from a simple tool to a complex electronic device.
Requirements: A set of legislation (e.g. EU directives, national laws) and technical standards (e.g. ISO, EN) that define the minimum standards of quality, safety, functionality, etc. that the product must meet.
Conformity assessment: This is the process by which an independent party (e.g. a certification body) or the manufacturer itself examines whether a product meets all requirements. The assessment may include laboratory tests, analysis of technical documentation and production inspections.
Why is the conformity assessment important?
Consumer safety: Ensures that products are safe to use and do not endanger human health or the environment.
Consumer confidence: Products with a conformity mark (e.g. CE mark) are perceived as high-quality products, which builds consumer confidence.
Market access: Many countries require products entering their market to be certified for conformity.
Protection of competition: Prevents products from entering the market that do not meet minimum standards, thus ensuring fair competition.
Examples of requirements that may be set out in legislation and standards:
Safety requirements:
The product must not pose a risk to human health and life.
Quality requirements:
The product must meet the specified technical and functional parameters.
Environmental requirements:
The product must not affect the environment.
Labelling requirements:
The product must be appropriately labelled so that the consumer can make an informed purchasing decision.
In summary, the product conformity assessment is a key element in the product marketing process. It ensures that the product is safe, meets consumer expectations and fulfills applicable legislation.
